Aligning for Success
In a Hangout With Mentors webinar, (which I host weekly), we discussed what “building alignment” means in the context of leadership in our UnStoppable Alliance Community. I choose aligning for success on purpose, Our community also chooses aligning for success on purpose. This discussion was, as always, very thought provoking.
We start by asking the question: why align?
The real question though is: why not?
If you’re building up an enterprise, no matter what it may involve, how big or small, or where you are on your journey, there is no end to the benefits you can reap from being aligned in a productive and positive community. There certainly is a strength in numbers and creating beneficial alignments will allow you to find a path to progress that you may never have discovered alone.
This topic is especially pertinent for us as this whole question of alignment is exactly what we are about here at the UnStoppable Alliance.
On the surface, finding ways in which, and people with whom, to align might seem straight-forward but actually it takes a lot of energy and purposeful decision-making to turn an alignment into something truly worthwhile and beneficial.
Within the UnStoppable Alliance we made a very conscious decision to come together and align our goals and passions in order to create this community, both for all of you out there and for our own benefit too because we get so much out of this incredible unity.
So when you’re looking to create your own powerful alliances, you need to make sure you’re joining forces with like-minded people with similar passions to you and, beyond that initial decision to align, there needs to also be an alignment in clarity, dialogue and mission to ensure you are working towards the same goals.
The Power Of Aligning
The most important of all the questions here then is perhaps: how do I align successfully to create strong and lasting communities and business relationships?
This isn’t something that happens in the moment an alignment is formed, but takes time, energy and real intention. Effective leaders understand that alignment is not simply something to check off a to-do list but a dynamic, ongoing process that requires continual monitoring and realignment as conditions and needs change.
However, research shows that more than half of leaders report little or no training or guidance in the practice of creating alignment. In fact, only 47% report having a clear understanding of what “building alignment” even means in the context of leadership.
“The most empowering condition of all is when the entire organization is aligned with its mission, and people’s passions and purpose are in synch with each other.”
– Bill George, Professor of Management Practice at Harvard Business School and former CEO of Medtronic
There are a few key things to take into consideration in order to work towards strong and passionate, but also flexible and versatile, alignments:
In order to make the most of an alignment, it needs to be one of clarity. Clarity is a delicate balance and requires much communication as well and understanding, effort and patience. In my opinion, it is also an art of sorts. When leaders are in alignment in clarity of mission and passion it ripples out to all members and makes for a much stronger whole.
Creating an environment that invites dialogue is key. Through the encouragement of dialogue, leadership establishes a two-way conversation that will then engage the group as a whole and give people not only greater input but greater engagement, responsibility and commitment.
Allowing for dialogue will help to strengthen all alignments and ensure that needs on all sides are being respected and met. The more people feel valued and understood, the more they will be able to open up and contribute, and the more powerful and beneficial that alignment becomes.
A key to great leadership and a successful nurturing of alignments is not being loud or controlling. The best way is to lead through high energy and passion, by breathing life into projects and communities, and by recognizing and respecting the quality and value that everyone has to offer.
If you are able to recognize and nurture positive and advantageous alignments, then you will open yourself and your whole community up to a world of learning, communicating and connecting that will bring only positive results.
We are but a drop of water alone, but together we can create significant ripples in the ocean.
