I have recently had the absolute privilege of recording a discussion with one of my great friends & colleagues Paul Barlow. Our conversations are always thought provoking & this one is certainly ‘par for the course’.
The topic that we discuss in the video below is simple yet so essentially important.
As Paul mentioned a few times in the video: humans are humans. We all as humans want to belong and relate.
Therefore, we can surmise that trust is a part of relationship building.
Trust is indeed the key ingredient in the recipe of marketing success.
Just take a moment to think about the core concepts of getting to know someone if you were face to face. You
might make the usual cordial pleasantries or greetings. Then you would immediately get into sharing
stories and asking each other questions; the back-and-forth balance of talking and listening; maybe some
laughter but definitely some sharing of personal stories. Storytelling really is a fundamental human activity. It’s how we learn, it’s how we relate, it’s how we share, it’s how we laugh, it’s how we find, discover and inspire action.
Therefore, we might conclude that storytelling is the most effective way of relationship building.
Now you might be thinking OK, so we’re talking about trust, relationship-building and storytelling …
What does that have to do with ‘disrupt’?
What does that have to do with humanizing digital marketing?
Let’s start with contemplating the definition of Disrupt.
Disrupt: to cause (something) to be unable to continue in the normal way : to interrupt the normal progress or activity of (something)
In an effort to keep this post as light as possible… I will simply say that “offline marketing” or Network Marketing sometimes referred to as “belly to belly” has limited Reach and is time & energy consuming. “Online Marketing” or Digital Marketing has a much increased reach although without the “Humanizing Digital Marketing” components/strategies in place has limited resonance, relate-ability. The internet allows us to reach massive amounts of people at any given time, to anywhere in the world. Wow!!! really!
To be absolutely honest with you, I would really like you to watch the entire video – it’s a great, dynamic conversation back-and-forth between Paul and myself.
Paul Barlow has experience in the direct selling space for over 16 years, as a representative, consulting & corporate executive roles. To make an effort to make eye contact; maybe even get out and meet your clients and prospects, but always taking the time to make your communication, even though digital, as human as possible. With authenticity and organization of intent that’s where the value is.
People are people. Humans all need the same thing: connection, trust-building and a solution for the problem.
So, let’s get back to those words, ‘disrupt’, ‘initiative’, ‘intercept’ and ‘impact’. Take those words applied to cause culture and community. Then add creativity, productivity and passion. The possibilities are limitless. We can breakthrough the barriers between off-line and online. We can attract our target audience and engage them in a world of possibilities.
My intention of this post is simply to encourage you to Disrupt what you may have been told are “proven” online marketing strategies. You absolutely will breakthrough your online barriers by being true to who you are, authentic & yes, share your story!
