The Importance of StoryTelling to Reach, Connect and Engage with your Audience
In the business of emotional transportation…
Storytelling isn’t just for novelists spinning a world of intricate fiction for their readers. Storytelling is, and has been since the beginning of time, a fundamental human activity. Before we started to write things down – and way before we wrote down every tiny little thing for all to see on social media! – stories were utilized to communicate, connect and progress. In business, emotional transportation creates the experience buyers are looking for, this is where the importance of storytelling creates impact.
In today’s society, the power of the story has perhaps deepened rather than lessened any, and it’s important to recognize the way in which you can use storytelling to reach, engage and connect with your audience. Stories will inspire people and motivate them as well as allow them to see who you are and what you’re about.
So if you haven’t yet discovered how essential storytelling is for your business, it’s time to do so! No matter who you are, where you are, or what you’re selling or providing, there isn’t a business today that won’t benefit from engaging with its audience in a deeper, more honest way and learning to do this well could be a vital instrument to your success.
As Peter Buber explained regarding his book Tell To Win:
“Today, everyone – whether they know it or not – is in the emotional transportation business. More and more, success is won by creating compelling stories that have the power to move partners, shareholders, customers, and employees to action. Simply put, if you can’t tell it, you can’t sell it.”
With the rise of the digital age and social media, storytelling has expanded its reach and become even more embedded in human connection and ritual. This has offered an incredible resource for businesses to get out there and tell their story to an audience waiting to be found, but it has also created a saturation of influencer marketing. It is vital to find a way to humanize the digital means on offer to ensure your story doesn’t get lost amongst the masses so that you can fully harness the power of storytelling to create something relatable and with resonance.
This isn’t something you can avoid today. With the average person being given the means by which to step into the entrepreneurial mindset and lifestyle, there is an expectation on the part of the consumer. Social media, blogs, vlogging, they have all had such wide appeal and success for a reason. People not only want, but expect, to know the faces and stories behind the products they’re consuming now. In fact, the face and the story have become the brand itself and if you can’t attract someone to your brand then you’re going to get left behind.
Reach. Relate. Resonate.
Simply telling your story is the place to start. It will help you to create engagement and develop direct relationships with the people you need to, whomever they may be. And this is exactly what you need to be doing to make deeper connections with your customers and take your business success to the next level.
When you tell a story, you share a piece of you and people will respond to that. Unlike simply putting out a sales pitch or a corporate message, the honesty and individuality of storytelling will reach and resonate with the right people.

Telling your story will bring the right people to you
Of course, your customers care what your business provides for them, but they also care who you are and this is what will set you apart. Like and trust will go a long way!
Don’t blend into the background. Tell people what makes you different and why they should connect with and potentially buy from you. Concentrate on telling them who you are, what you’re doing, what your story is.
Don’t be afraid to show them your personality and your own unique awesomeness! There are people out there looking for you and what you can offer and sharing your story will bring them to you.
Start from where you are
This might seem like a daunting thing to do, especially if it’s a new idea. So keep it simple. Don’t get caught up in the content as what you’re saying isn’t nearly as important as the emotional engagement you offer.
If you’re authentic, identify with your audience, and don’t hide away from emotion, you’ll find that you create connections no matter where you are in your story and these emotional connections are much deeper and longer-lasting than impersonal business ones.
So stop looking for excuses as to why you’re not ready to start telling your story, because you’ll always manage to find them. It doesn’t matter what stories others are telling, this is your story and you can only start your story from where you are. You’ll be surprised how people will connect with you based on an honest story, no matter what point in your process it comes from.
Persuasive storytelling truly is an art that can only be improved upon with practice. The sooner you get telling your story (and the more stories you tell!), the better you’ll get at telling it and the more refined and engaging it will become.
